Switchboard upgrade quote template (Australia)
Switchboard upgrades are a common job where the customer wants to know exactly what they're paying for. An itemised quote with clear exclusions protects you when you open up an old board and find surprises.
Line items to include
- Labour (hours × your rate) to remove the old board and install the new one
- New enclosure with main switch, sized for the circuits plus spare poles
- RCBOs (one per circuit), with the quantity
- Surge protection, if you're including it
- Links, labels, cable and sundries
- Testing, labelling and the certificate of compliance
Asbestos and existing wiring
Older switchboards may be mounted on backing boards that contain asbestos. Exclude asbestos removal unless you're licensed and quoting for it, and say what happens if testing finds existing faults (for example, that rectification will be quoted separately).
Compliance wording
State that the work is done to AS/NZS 3000 by a licensed electrician and that the certificate of electrical safety or compliance required in your state or territory will be issued on completion. Put your electrical contractor licence number on the quote. Supply authority, meter and main service upgrades are usually excluded.
Showing materials markup and GST
Enter the enclosure and RCBOs at cost and let your markup apply, so the customer sees one price per line. If you're registered for GST, show the ex-GST subtotal, GST at 10% and the total.

Common questions
Should I quote an RCBO for every circuit?
Many electricians now quote RCBOs per circuit so one fault doesn't trip the whole house. Show the quantity so the customer can see what's included.
What if the old switchboard has an asbestos backing board?
List asbestos removal as an exclusion unless you're quoting it, and explain what happens if it's found, so there's no dispute on the day.
Does the quote need to mention the compliance certificate?
It's good practice to say the certificate required in your state or territory will be issued on completion.
